Queen Camilla has broken her silence on the moment she almost let slip one of the Royal Family's most closely guarded secrets, describing the emotional weight of knowing about King Charles' cancer diagnosis before the world did.
The Queen shared her experience in a film produced to mark the 30th anniversary of Maggie's, a cancer support charity of which she has served as president since 2008.
During a candid conversation with Dame Laura Lee, the charity's chief executive, Camilla reflected on what it felt like to be carrying such news in private.
The visit that almost gave it away
On 31 January 2024, just days after Charles had received his diagnosis, Camilla visited a Maggie's centre in London.
The palace had not yet made any announcement, and she was expected to engage with patients and their families as she normally would on such visits.
She admitted the experience was far from ordinary. Being surrounded by people living with cancer, knowing what was unfolding at home, made the visit deeply personal in a way she had not anticipated.
"I almost said something," Camilla revealed, adding that she was "longing to let it out" but understood the timing was not right.
Buckingham Palace officially disclosed the diagnosis on 5 February 2024, stating that a form of cancer had been detected while Charles was undergoing treatment for benign prostate enlargement.
The palace was clear that it was not prostate cancer, though the specific type has never been made public.
Charles chose to go public with the news himself, with the palace saying he hoped doing so would encourage broader awareness and offer comfort to others facing similar situations.
He stepped back from public duties temporarily but returned to engagements in April 2024 after showing encouraging signs of progress.
Camilla praised her husband's resilience throughout, saying his diagnosis did not slow him down in the way one might expect.
"Nothing stopped him," she said, describing his continued commitment to his role as his personal way of coping with the illness.
In December 2025, Charles revealed that his treatment schedule had been scaled back following positive results from early intervention.
Buckingham Palace confirmed he had responded exceptionally well to treatment, though his cancer has not officially been declared to be in remission.
Reflecting on the Maggie's visit, Camilla said the experience shifted something in her. Rather than making small talk with patients, she found herself genuinely wanting to understand their journeys, and watching family members support their loved ones gave her a deeper appreciation of what cancer support services truly mean to people living through the illness.
