At least 23 people were killed and five others injured after a bus and a truck collided head-on along the BR-373 highway in Brazil's southern state of Paraná, according to the Federal Highway Police.
The crash occurred at around 04:30 local time (07:30 GMT) near kilometre 209 of the highway. The majority of the fatalities were passengers aboard the bus, while the truck driver also died in the collision.
Patients being transported to medical appointments
The bus was operated by the municipal health department of Imbituva, a city of approximately 30,000 residents, and was carrying patients and their family members to hospitals serving the region around Paraná's capital, Curitiba, roughly 180 km away.
BBC News indicated the passengers were en route to medical appointments in Ponta Grossa, about 60 km from Imbituva.
Following the tragedy, Imbituva's authorities declared two days of official mourning.
Investigation launched as highway remained closed
The Federal Highway Police opened a formal investigation into the cause of the collision. Early evidence gathered at the scene suggested the truck may have crossed into the opposite lane before the impact, though investigators have not confirmed a definitive cause.
Forensic experts and highway police officers were deployed to examine the crash site. Road operator Via Araucaria confirmed in a post on X that the BR-373 highway had been shut down, with no estimate given for when it would reopen.
