Kenyans stepping out on Thursday, August 20, 2026, should plan their day with warm jackets and umbrellas in hand as the latest weather forecast points to scattered rainfall, chilly mornings, and gusty winds across multiple regions.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued its daily advisory valid from 9:00 pm on Wednesday to 9:00 pm on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The report highlights that “Rainfall expected in some parts of Migori, Homabay, Narok, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Nyamira, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisumu, Busia, Kisii, Nyeri and Lamu Embu counties.”
Those residing in these regions can look forward to light showers during the day, alongside afternoon thunderstorms in parts of Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin.
Chilly mornings and strong winds
For those in Nairobi and the Central Highlands, cool weather will stay dominant through Thursday morning.
The forecast notes that “Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Machakos, Makueni, Nairobi, Kajiado and Laikipia Counties.”
Nairobi will experience a chilly start with night temperatures dropping to 12°C before reaching a daytime high of 23°C under sunny intervals. Nyandarua County will record the lowest night temperature nationwide at 8°C, accompanied by light morning rains.
Alongside the low temperatures, the department has cautioned residents across northern, eastern, and coastal stretches to prepare for strong wind currents.
The forecaster cautions that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties.”
Higher temperatures across northern and coastal regions
While central areas remain relatively cool, northern regions will face higher heat on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Turkana is expected to hit the highest daytime maximum temperature at 36°C, closely followed by Mandera at 35°C and Garissa at 34°C under sunny intervals.
On the Coast, Mombasa will average a warm 29°C during the day and 23°C at night, while Lamu could see light showers in both the morning and afternoon hours. Kisumu and Homa Bay in the Lake region will hit daytime maximums of 30°C.
Rainfall tracking by the department from August 18 to August 19, 2026 shows that Ulanda Girls station recorded the highest rainfall level at 13.8 mm, followed by Kisii at 7.8 mm, Mwongori at 5.4 mm, and Kangema at 5.3 mm.
