But within 24 hours, her condition had worsened dramatically, and she was admitted to a hospital in Volta Redonda, Brazil, on August 14.
Despite receiving intensive care, she did not recover, passing away on Monday. Her funeral was held in Volta Redonda on Tuesday morning.

"We lost the battle. It is still so difficult to write these words," Marcus wrote, describing Marta as "the love of my life" and his closest companion.
He spoke of her quiet, gentle character, calling her pure-hearted, shy and deeply caring.
On her role as a mother, he said:
"As a mother, she was love, care, protection and devotion," adding that their boys "had the privilege of having a mother who loved them in a way that words will never be able to explain."
Marcus also praised his wife's courage in her final days, noting:
" She fought until the very last moment."
Looking ahead, he acknowledged the weight of what now lies before him, describing it as "the hardest mission of my life."
He pledged to raise their three sons the way Marta would have wanted, and to ensure "they grow up knowing exactly who their mother was, how much she loved them and how she will be present in every part of their lives."
