United Opposition Issues Demand to IEBC Amid Sustained Goon Attacks
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
On Wednesday, August 19, the United Opposition appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure a stable election environment ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi, People's Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua raised concerns over alleged voter intimidation due to the multiple goon incidents reported in the country.
Karua argued that if political violence and militia activity are left unchecked, it could hinder Kenyans from exercising their democratic rights.
She urged the IEBC to collaborate with all institutions to ensure that it safeguards Kenyans' right to vote.
"We further call upon the IEBC to work closely with all relevant institutions to ensure that every Kenyan can vote freely, peacefully and without fear," she stated.

The PLP revealed that the United Opposition would organise a people's forum for election preparedness, and invited Kenyans to join them and express their opinions.
She intimated that the forum would be spearheaded by former Chief Justice David Maraga, former Attorney General Justin Muturi and Suba South Member of Parliament (MP) Caroli Omondi.
"We are calling on people of goodwill to join us in forming the forum which will be coordinated by Maraga, Muturi and Caroli Omondi on October 9, 2026.
"The future of Kenya will not be determined by militias or fear, but by the sovereign will of the people. God bless Kenya," she read.
Other leaders present for the joint address include Siaya Governor James Orengo, Jubilee's Fred Matiang'i, DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The leaders of the Opposition further called on the office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor to pay attention to the events happening in Kenya.
Karua stated that the Prosecutor should initiate investigations against President William Ruto, whom she claimed has the greatest responsibility of securing the country.
She also demanded that the ICC prosecutor review and determine the previous charges against the President.
The statement came amid attacks against Opposition Leaders in the country, including the attack on DCP Leader Rigathi Gachagua
