Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has announced the death of one of Nyeri county's oldest and most beloved community figures, Mama Mirriam Waruguru King'ori, who was affectionately known as Maitu Wa Ndirangu.
He said she was 127 years old.
Gachagua shared the news on Tuesday, August 18, in a heartfelt tribute on Facebook that quickly drew attention online, with many Kenyans pausing to reflect on the remarkable length of her life.
How did Gachagua mourn Nyeri woman?
Mama Waruguru spent her years in Kieni, Nyeri county, where she became a cornerstone of her community.
According to Gachagua, she lived long enough to witness Kenya pass through multiple defining chapters of its history, from the colonial era through to independence and beyond.
She is survived by descendants spanning five generations, including two generations of great-grandchildren and three generations of great-great-grandchildren.
Gachagua described her as "a matriarch, a friend and a tower of wisdom" who had a rare gift for bringing families together.
"One hundred and twenty-seven years of life, five generations of legacy, and countless lives touched. This is a beautiful legacy that will live on," he wrote.
Gachagua extended his condolences directly to her son Dickson Ndirangu and the wider Waruguru family, thanking them for sharing her presence with the broader community during her lifetime.
