Temptations kibao: Singer rejects KSh 500k endorsement deal over her faith
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Gospel artist Faith Nduhiu, known as the 'hugging lady', received an unexpected call from a businessman who admired her content creation work
- The caller offered her a brand ambassador role worth KSh 500,000 plus extra benefits, including a fuel allowance
- Faith admitted the offer moved her to tears, but her faith pushed her to reject it, a decision she says was genuinely painful
Gospel artist and content creator Faith Nduhiu turned down a KSh 500,000 brand ambassador deal after concluding that the products she would have promoted conflicted with her Christian convictions.
The offer came through an unexpected phone call from a businessman who praised her content style and her skill in weaving advertisements into her work.
When Bottles Came Calling
He asked for her rate card, which she provided, and then named a figure she said had never come her way before in her ministry.
The caller sent photographs of the company's products via WhatsApp, and Faith admitted they were visually persuasive.
"The bottles were very enticing. Eiiiii, they were calling," she said, laughing as she recalled the moment.
Beyond the amount, the businessman sweetened the deal further, offering to fuel her car so she could travel to Nairobi, meet his team, and sign the paperwork in person.
A Conviction That Came at a Price
When she looked at the proposed payment, her emotions got the better of her.
She also found herself wondering whether the caller had gone through her social media pages carefully enough to understand who she was and what she stood for as a gospel artist.
When the businessman called again to confirm whether she was comfortable proceeding, Faith gave him her answer.
"Unfortunately, I don't do such adverts," she told him. "Anything that does not glorify God, itakuwa ngumu."
God Protect Gospel Ministers
She drew on the biblical account of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, three figures who refused to compromise their faith regardless of the consequences they faced.
"I know we are in hard times and compromising can tempt us, but like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood their ground, that's what Christ is calling us to do," Faith said.
She also cited the scripture asking what it profits a person to gain the whole world yet forfeit their soul as the anchor for her decision.
Faith closed her reflection with a prayer for others navigating similar pressures, asking God to help them to remain firm in such moments.
"It was painful," she acknowledged, before adding: "And that's how a deal of half a million and other benefits went like that."
Kikuyu Singer Rejects KSh 1m Gift from MP
In another incident, Kikuyu gospel minister Philip Kimani left Kenyans surprised after gracefully declining a KSh 1 million gift.
Kimani turned down the offer from Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia despite massive fan support, stating the recognition alone was enough.
His counterpart, Dr Sarah K, also rejected the gift hours later, urging that the funds be redirected to a needy person.
