Nairobi - Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino appeared outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters along Kiambu Road on Tuesday, August 18, accompanying his security aide Oliver Jaoko, who had surrendered to authorities after being named a person of interest in connection with violence in Homa Bay.
Jaoko is accused of being in possession of an illegal firearm. Police had identified him in relation to an incident involving members of a group known as Team Linda Mwananchi.
Babu Owino calls for arrest of Wanga and Kaluma
Speaking to journalists at the DCI premises, Babu Owino described Jaoko as innocent and challenged the police's handling of the matter, questioning why those he described as the victims of the attack were being pursued while the alleged perpetrators remained free.
"Currently at DCI Headquarters, presenting the innocent Oliver Jaoko, whom the police have identified as a person of interest. The Police should arrest Gladys Wanga and Peter Kaluma for sponsoring goons to attack members of Team Linda Mwananchi. The Inspector General of Police must explain why they want to arrest those who were attacked while the attackers are left free. Wonders will never end," Babu Owino said.
The MP specifically named Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, accusing them of sponsoring individuals responsible for the violence. He directed his call to the Inspector General of Police, demanding an explanation for what he characterised as a selective approach to the investigation.
Oliver Jaoko Surrenders to DCI
Jaoko's surrender came after law enforcement flagged him as a person of interest in the Homa Bay incident. Babu Owino framed his presence at the DCI offices as an act of solidarity, personally escorting his aide to cooperate with investigators while simultaneously challenging the direction of the inquiry.
No charges had been formally announced against Jaoko at the time of his surrender.
