This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma accused Sifuna, Orengo, and Babu Owino's convoy of running over and killing a widow
- Kaluma alleged that the Linda Mwananchi team's supporters shot and hacked several residents in his constituency during the incident
- The MP vowed that those responsible would face justice, as multiple vehicles linked to the team were reported torched during the chaos
Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has publicly accused leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi political team of causing the death of a widow and injuring several residents during a rally in Homa Bay.
In a post published on his Facebook page, Kaluma named Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as individuals whose convoy allegedly struck and killed a woman identified as Lorraine, described as a widow and resident of Shauri Yako in Homa Bay Town.
Did Sifuna's convoy kill Homa Bay widow?
"Sifuna/Orengo/Babu, your vehicle ran over and killed Lorraine, a widow and resident of Shauri Yako, Homa Bay Town, at night. You left her on the road as you continued your havoc to Kendu Bay," Kaluma wrote.
The MP further claimed that supporters affiliated with the team shot and attacked several people within his constituency.
He warned that those involved would be held accountable, directly targeting what he called the "Linda-Gachagua/Uhuru" movement.
Residents who knew the deceased responded with grief and anger on social media.
How Kenyans reacted to widow's death
Ogola Paul Kenneth said the lady was widowed very early in life when she suddenly lost her husband and had been working very hard to educate her four kids.
"Kaluma, you have now acted in a way that has cost her her life. What have you benefited by creating four orphans? Will you take responsibility of upbringing her kids? Will you accept to adopt those kids now that their relatives are in Kakamega and Uganda? Personally, Kaluma, I'm done with you, and neither my family nor myself will ever associate with you again."
William Janabi Seven said: "If only Kaluma, Wanga, and their broad-based counterparts had acted as mature leaders and allowed the Linda Mwananchi team to campaign peacefully in Homa Bay, without the show of force and goons, there might have been no casualties today. May mama Lorraine's soul rest in peace, and may God comfort the family. May all the victims' families get justice."
Meshack Charles added: "You were captured inciting your constituents to deal with anyone chanting one term. I think you are the architect of all these misfortunes. You should be number one on the list."
As of the time of publication, neither Sifuna, Orengo, nor Babu Owino had issued a public statement in response to Kaluma's accusations.
Violence erupts during Homa Bay rally
Meanwhile, the incident occurred during a Linda Mwananchi campaign visit to Homa Bay, during which Kaluma was filmed instructing a group of youths to confront anyone chanting "one term" slogans directed at President William Ruto.
Following the altercation, multiple vehicles belonging to the visiting team were set ablaze, and several individuals sustained injuries.
He then blamed the Linda Mwananchi principals for violently attacking the residents following their attempts to defend themselves from armed goons. NCIC has since summoned the MP over his inflammatory remarks.
