The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has advertised the position of director general, signalling a move to replace Daniel Kiptoo at the helm of Kenya's energy sector regulator.
EPRA, established under the Energy Act 2019, published the vacancy notice in MyGov on Tuesday, August 18, under reference VA/1/8/2026, inviting qualified Kenyans to apply for the role.
The authority is responsible for regulating electric power, petroleum, coal, and renewable energy subsectors in the country.
What are the duties of EPRA DG?
The person appointed will carry broad oversight responsibilities across Kenya's energy landscape.
These include providing strategic leadership, regulating electric power utilities involved in generation, transmission and distribution, and supervising petroleum operations covering importation, refining, transportation and storage.
The director general will also be expected to oversee the regulation of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, bioenergy, tidal and hydropower, while maintaining strong internal governance and control systems within the authority.
What are the qualifications for EPRA DG?
Applicants must be Kenyan citizens holding a bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, law, finance, environmental studies, economics or energy from a recognised university.
A master's degree in any of those fields will be considered an added advantage.
On the experience side, candidates must demonstrate at least seven years of management experience at a senior level, alongside a minimum of two years specifically within the petroleum and energy sector.
Membership to a relevant professional body in good standing is also mandatory, as is compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which covers integrity and ethical conduct in public office.
The successful candidate will be appointed on a contract lasting three years, renewable once for a further three years, subject to satisfactory performance and subject to the mandatory retirement age.
