Khwisero Sub-County Secures Sh350 Million for Major Electrification Push Under Last Mile Programme
The investment, part of a Sh2.5 billion countywide initiative, aims to connect over 6,000 households and stimulate local economies.
Khwisero Sub-County is poised for a significant expansion of its electricity grid, following an allocation of Sh350 million from the government to connect over 6,000 households. This crucial initiative, spearheaded under the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, was announced by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary (CS) Opiyo Wandayi, marking a vital step towards universal energy access in the region.
The dedicated funding for Khwisero forms part of a broader governmental commitment, with approximately Sh2.5 billion earmarked for various electrification projects across Kakamega County during the current financial year. CS Wandayi underscored this commitment while flagging off construction materials in Kisa West Ward, Khwisero Sub-County, specifically targeting more than 500 households in Eshiabalika and Eshitimba villages for immediate connection.
These projects are designed to profoundly improve the quality of life for residents by extending reliable power to homes, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and local businesses. Wandayi emphasized the government's resolve to ensure that more rural communities gain access to the national grid, highlighting that electricity is a fundamental enabler for stimulating economic activities and enhancing the delivery of essential services across Kenya and the wider East African region.
Beyond domestic use, the Energy CS urged prospective beneficiaries to leverage the new connections to establish and expand small enterprises. He articulated that increased electricity access is vital for fostering entrepreneurship, creating employment opportunities, and ultimately boosting household incomes, thereby contributing to broader socio-economic development.
The implementation of these critical infrastructure projects falls under the purview of Kenya Power and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC). CS Wandayi was accompanied by a delegation of leaders, including Nyando MP Jared Okello, Malava MP Oscar Nabulindo, and Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda, all of whom reiterated the transformative potential of these electrification efforts for the targeted villages.
