At Tupac Shakur murder trial, fans hope for justice decades later
Fans of rapper Tupac Shakur who attended opening arguments in the long-awaited murder trial over his 1996 killing said on Monday (August 17) they hoped the proceedings would finally bring justice nearly 30 years after his death.
Outside the Las Vegas courthouse, fan Derrick Lee Stanton Jr. said the trial represented a significant moment for those who have followed the case for decades.
“After 30 years, I feel like it’s more important than ever right now to even be having this conversation be brought up, for everybody to be focusing on this and to even want to find some justice for Tupac Shakur,” Stanton said.
Another fan, Din Malone, who wore a T-shirt bearing Shakur’s image, said he hoped everyone involved in the killing would eventually be held accountable.
“The person being accused of everything, you know, he didn’t just pull the gun out his pocket. He got it from somebody. So everybody involved did it. I would like to see all of them go to jail,” Malone said.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, is charged in Nevada’s Clark County with a single count of murder using a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty.
Davis is accused of leading a group of men to kill Shakur, 25, who was one of rap’s most commercially successful and influential artists, in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.
The trial before Judge Carli Kierny is expected to last up to six weeks.
