"Top-tier competition: Canada invites 1,000 applicants for permanent residency
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Canada conducted a Canadian Experience Class draw on August 18, 2026, extending 1,000 invitations to apply for permanent residence
- The minimum CRS score required jumped to 523, up from the 516 cut-off set during the previous CEC draw on August 5
- IRCC has already issued over 113,000 Express Entry invitations across all programmes in 2026, with CEC candidates taking a large share
Canada's Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issued 1,000 invitations to apply for permanent residence on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, through a draw conducted exclusively under the Canadian Experience Class stream of the Express Entry system.
The round set a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 523, making it one of the most competitive CEC draws of 2026. The draw was confirmed through ministerial instructions published by IRCC, showing it took place at 10:13:44 UTC.
Canada's Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Lena Metlege Diab, signed the instructions in Ottawa on August 18, confirming that invitations could be issued between August 18 and August 19, 2026.
"Invitations may be issued to eligible foreign nationals who rank among the first 1,000 eligible foreign nationals in the group ranking," the instructions stated.
Where several candidates shared the lowest qualifying score, a tie-breaking rule applied based on profile submission date and time, pegged at August 17, 2026, at 22:09:00 UTC.
How the Canadian Experience Class Works
The CEC targets skilled workers already living and working in Canada who wish to transition to permanent residency.
Candidates generally need at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the past three years, totalling 1,560 hours, in occupations under National Occupational Classification TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3.
Language requirements stand at Canadian Language Benchmark 7 for TEER 0 or 1 positions, and CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3 roles.
Unlike some other federal immigration programmes, the CEC carries no education requirement and no obligation to demonstrate settlement funds. Applicants must also intend to reside outside Quebec.
Express Entry manages three federal economic immigration streams: the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, and the Federal Skilled Trades Programme. CRS scores factor in age, education, language proficiency and Canadian work experience, with the highest-ranked profiles receiving invitations in regular draws.
August 18 Draw Compared to Earlier Rounds
The latest round was markedly smaller and more selective than the CEC draw held on August 5, when Canada extended 3,000 invitations at a cut-off of 516.
The rise to 523 alongside the reduced invitation volume places the August 18 draw among the tightest CEC rounds recorded this year.
By mid-August 2026, IRCC had already issued more than 113,000 Express Entry invitations across all programmes, with CEC candidates accounting for a considerable share of that figure.
