Preparations for the Mombasa International Agricultural Show are gathering pace, with the annual event scheduled to run from September 2 to 6 at the Mombasa showground.
What to Expect at This Year's Show
ASK Mombasa branch chairperson Henry Nyaga told Tuko.co.ke in an exclusive interview that this year's edition is set to be bigger than the last, with more than 200 exhibitors drawn from trade, tourism, manufacturing, transport, wildlife, and other sectors expected to participate.
Over 700 heads of livestock will also be on display, giving schoolchildren an opportunity to learn about different animal species.
This year's theme, "Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiative for Sustainable Economic Growth," is intended to draw farmers, entrepreneurs, business professionals, and young people in large numbers.
Nyaga noted that several organisations which stepped back during the COVID-19 pandemic are now returning.
"Organisations such as KEMRI, SHA, and major companies like KICC will also be returning after a lengthy absence from the show," he said.
The show is also attracting international participation, with exhibitors from more than seven countries including India and Pakistan. Uganda's consulate has already set up its stands and has committed to bringing 16 companies to exhibit.
Blue Economy, Security, and Entertainment
Nyaga placed particular emphasis on the blue economy, arguing that the coastal region holds enormous untapped potential.
"If we invest significantly in the blue economy sector and value addition, many young individuals will secure employment, which will reduce the number of unemployed youths in the coastal region," he said.
He also called on the Mombasa county government to sustain its support for farmers through seedlings and fertilisers.
"Once the farmer is capable of producing sufficient food, he will be able to sell it in the market, thereby creating job opportunities for the younger generations," Nyaga said.
Ticket prices will remain at KSh 350 for adults and KSh 300 for children, with a group discount for parties of ten or more. Nyaga encouraged schools and universities to attend in large numbers.
"We strongly encourage schools and universities to attend in large numbers, as we have a wealth of excellent exhibits to present to them," he stated.
On security, more than 200 police officers will be deployed across the showground, with ambulances and boat services on standby for emergencies.
Visitors can also expect cultural food, drinks, and dances at the cultural village, alongside performances from schools that excelled in music festivals.
