Nairobi - The Kenya Meteorological Department issued a 24-hour weather forecast on Thursday, August 20, 2026, covering conditions across multiple counties from 9p.m. that night through 9p.m. on Friday, August 21.
The bulletin, released at 3pm. on August 20, outlines three distinct weather patterns affecting different parts of the country during the forecast period.
Counties expecting rainfall
Residents in 18 counties should prepare for rainfall, according to the forecast. The affected areas include Migori, Homabay, Narok, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Nyamira, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Nandi, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisumu, Busia, Kisii, Lamu, and Kwale.
Temperatures across these counties are expected to range between a minimum of 11°C in Bomet and a maximum of 31°C in Busia. Kisumu is forecast to record highs of 29°C and lows of 19°C, while Nakuru will experience temperatures between 15°C and 26°C.
Nairobi, which is not on the rainfall list, is forecast to record a maximum of 26°C and a minimum of 12°C, with intermittent cool and cloudy conditions expected throughout the day.
Strong winds and cool conditions across other regions
Fifteen counties, including Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Machakos, Makueni, Nairobi, Kajiado, and Laikipia, are set to experience cool and cloudy spells with intermittent breaks throughout the period.
The department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) over 12 counties: Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kitui.
In terms of daily patterns, mornings are expected to be partly cloudy with light showers or thunderstorms in affected areas, while afternoons and evenings will bring sunny intervals, with some locations experiencing occasional light showers later in the day.
