Nairobi: The United States has handed over a new multi-storey training complex to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) at the National Defence College (NDC) in Karen in a move described as an investment in strategic military education and bilateral cooperation.
The US Embassy Nairobi announced the handover on Thursday, August 20, noting that the facility had the capacity to nearly triple the current class size at the NDC.
A plaque unveiled at the ceremony bore the inscription: "Donated by the people of the United States of America in the spirit of cooperation between our nations."
What the new complex includes
The facility comprises a four-storey classroom and office building, a two-storey library, and an auditorium.
It was developed through the longstanding defence partnership between Kenya and the United States, facilitated by the United States Military Group.
The KDF said the complex expands the college's academic and administrative infrastructure while creating an enhanced environment for strategic learning, research, and professional development.
Both Kenyan and American flags were displayed at the handover ceremony, which included a plaque unveiling attended by military personnel and officials from both countries.
"Modern learning infrastructure plays an equally important role in fostering strategic thinking, strengthening institutional capacity, and developing leaders equipped to address emerging national, regional, and international security challenges," the KDF said in a statement.
Mixed reactions from Kenyans
The handover drew varied responses online. Some Kenyans welcomed the development as a sign of the strengthening partnership between the two countries.
@StanleyK32352 wrote, "Good partnership. We will witness great developments and security boosts in the near future. Thank America for always having a good partnership with Kenya."
@OsanyoOwino linked the gesture to Kenya's elevated diplomatic status, saying, "Indeed, these are dividends of Kenya being designated as a non-NATO ally by the US government."
@ericnyaga offered context from recent American headlines, noting, "Gifts aren't always a bad thing; even the United States accepted the gift of a presidential jet from Qatar. We are also free to gift them if we want."
Others were more skeptical. @Tellamahn wrote, "All this bugged structure in exchange for a billion-dollar mineral site. Tokenism is the game a fallen empire plays thinking it is surviving the emerging global trends."
@june25th2025 questioned the broader value of such arrangements, asking, "What is the return on investment for this kind of project?"
The NDC in Karen serves as Kenya's premier institution for strategic-level military education, training senior officers from the KDF and partner nations across the region.
