Sunday weather: Evening showers, strong winds expected as chilly conditions persist across Kenya
Kenyans should prepare for cool temperatures, scattered showers, and strong winds as the Kenya Meteorological Department issues its weather forecast for Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The advisory points to a noticeable drop in temperatures across the central region and highlands during the evening, alongside wet conditions in western counties and along the coastline.
Cool nights and scattered rainfall
According to the department, intermittent cool and cloudy conditions will dominate parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Machakos, Makueni, and Laikipia counties.
Nairobi will see evening temperatures drop to a minimum of 14°C, accompanied by partly cloudy skies and a chance of light showers in a few places.
Nyandarua County will record the lowest night temperature in the country, plunging to 9°C before rising to a maximum of 21°C during the day.
At the same time, the meteorological service notes that rainfall is to be expected in some parts of Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, and Vihiga counties.
In Kisumu, temperatures will range between 18°C at night and 30°C in the afternoon, with light showers and thunderstorms expected over a few areas.
Coastal counties, including Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu, will also experience light morning showers before transitioning to sunny intervals, with Mombasa recording temperatures between 23°C and 29°C.
Strong winds and northern heat
Beyond the chilly highlands and western rains, residents in eastern and northern regions will encounter gusty weather.
The forecast highlights “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots” affecting parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Kitui, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu counties.
These winds will exceed speeds of 12.5 metres per second.
Despite the windy conditions, the northern counties will continue to experience high daytime heat. Mandera is projected to record the highest temperature in the country at 37°C, followed closely by Turkana at 36°C, while Garissa and Wajir will both reach 34°C.
In contrast, daytime temperatures in Central Kenya will remain moderate, with Nyeri peaking at 23°C and Kiambu reaching 25°C. Sunsets across major urban centres will occur at 18:37 in Nairobi and 18:47 in Kisumu.
