Gor, Tusker clash amidst FKF league kick-off doubts
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
Gor Mahia and Tusker will clash in the Football Kenya Federation Super Cup at Nyayo National Stadium today from 4pm, as the 2026/2027 football season in the country kicks off.
Gor are the FKF Premier League champions, while Tusker are the FKF MozzartBet Cup winners.
This season’s opening fixture features a meeting between the two champions before the league season commences.
The Premier League is scheduled to begin next weekend.
However, uncertainty persists over the third promotional spot, which has seen Kariobangi Sharks, who finished 16th in the 18-team league table, file a case in court.
Both Gor and Tusker should be game-ready after taking part in the Cecafa Kagame Cup recently held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Gor reached the final where they lost 2-1 to home side Rayon Sports.
Tusker were eliminated in the group stages.
All eyes will be on the two clubs’ new signings.
Gor Mahia have signed midfielder Lesley Otieno from Nairobi United on a two-year contract, winger David Okoth from Kenya Police and striker Paul Okoth from Ulinzi Stars.
Okoth had an impressive campaign last season, finishing as Ulinzi Stars’ top scorer and the second-highest scorer in the league with 18 goals.
He carried his league form to the region, scoring five goals in the Kagame Cup.
Goalkeeper Michael Onyango has joined K’Ogalo from Equity and could see action today.
Among the players who have left Gor are defenders Levin Odhiambo and Geoffrey “Simiti” Ochieng’, midfielder Fidel Origa and goalkeeper Gad Mathews, who has joined Shabana. Mark Shabaan has moved to Posta Rangers on loan.
Forwards Chris Ochieng’, Bryson Wangai and Elly Owande have also departed, with Owande joining KCB on loan. Defender Mohamed Siraj has crossed to Tusker on loan.
Tusker, meanwhile, have signed Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma on a one-year deal, and Djiboutian defender Hassan Warsama.
Meanwhile, the start of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season could be delayed over a dispute on the promotion and relegation rules.
The uncertainty stems from conflicting FKF regulations adopted in 2019 and 2025.
According to the 2019 regulations, the bottom two Premier League teams are automatically relegated, while the top two National Super League sides earn automatic promotion. The third-placed NSL team faces the 16th-placed Premier League side in a two-leg play-off for Premiership status.
Under that formula, Bidco United and Sofapaka have been relegated, while Migori Youth and 3K have secured automatic promotion.
Mombasa United, who finished third in the NSL, would be required to face Kariobangi Sharks, who finished 16th in the Premier League, in a play-off.
However, the 2025 FKF regulations provide for the automatic relegation of the bottom three Premier League teams and automatic promotion of the top three NSL sides.
That would see Sofapaka, Kariobangi Sharks and Bidco United relegated, while Migori Youth, 3K and Mombasa United are promoted.
Sharks have challenged this rule in court.
