The Kenyan community in Alabama is grieving the sudden loss of George N. Mathu, a 20-year-old Kenyan-born man who died in a fiery car crash while heading to work in the US.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed that the accident took place at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Interstate 459 in Vestavia Hills.
George's vehicle reportedly veered off the interstate, overturned and burst into flames.
Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Life Cut Short
George, who graduated from Thompson High School in 2024, had built a quiet but meaningful life in Alabama.
Those who knew him described him as humble, hardworking and deeply caring towards the people around him.
He had been an altar boy at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and an active member of Jumuiya Juniors Alabama, a community group that brought together young Kenyans in the state.
His death has left his parents, John and Josephine Mathu, and four siblings without a son and brother they cherished.
**Memorial Service Details**
The community will gather to bid George farewell over two days at the end of August.
A memorial vigil is scheduled for Friday, August 28, at 6 pm., with the funeral Mass and burial set for Saturday, August 29, at 10 am.
Both the Mass and the burial will take place at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and Montevallo Cemetery respectively.
George Mathu was only just beginning his adult life when it was cut short. He was 20 years old.
