Multiple fatalities have been confirmed following a serious two-vehicle collision on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, in the early hours of August 22, 2025.
Cleveland Police said the crash, which occurred at approximately 3:39am, involved a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat.
The force described the situation as a "quickly-evolving incident" requiring a "significant" emergency response, and the road remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane, as Sky News reports.
Emergency Response at the Scene
North East Ambulance Service dispatched 14 resources to the scene, comprising emergency ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a hazardous area response team, and a doctor from Great North Air Ambulance Service.
"Sadly despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene," an ambulance service spokesperson said, offering condolences to all those affected.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise number of those who lost their lives.
Police and Officials Respond to the Crash
In a statement, Cleveland Police confirmed that officers are working to identify the victims and notify their next of kin. The force asked members of the public not to speculate about the incident while investigations are ongoing.
"The public are asked to use alternative routes," a police spokesperson said, adding that the road is expected to remain shut for a considerable period.
Anna Turley, the MP for Redcar, the constituency in which the collision occurred, expressed her condolences to those affected.
"I am deeply saddened to hear of the fatal collision on the A66 this morning. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and with everyone affected by this terrible incident," she said.
Turley also thanked the emergency services personnel who responded throughout the night and echoed police calls for restraint online.
"We would ask everyone to avoid speculating online to respect the families and the police while they do their work at this terrible time," she added.
