Kenya's presidential aircraft is back on home soil after a full year away, and it has returned with a serious technological facelift.
The Fokker 70, officially designated KAF308 and widely known as Harambee One, departed for the Netherlands in August 2025.
Which upgrades did Harambee One receive?
Fokker Services Group, the Dutch aviation firm that handled the work, carried out comprehensive deep maintenance on the aircraft, refreshed its interior and upgraded several key onboard systems during the 12-month stint.
The headline upgrade is the installation of the Gogo Galileo FDX satellite communications system.
The system taps into Eutelsat OneWeb's low-Earth-orbit network and provides high-speed internet connectivity while airborne, capable of reaching download speeds of up to 195 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 32 Mbps.
That kind of in-flight connectivity allows the President and his team to stay fully operational and reachable during air travel.
Capital FM reports that since its return this week, the jet has already completed several domestic flights covering routes between Nairobi, Eldoret, Mombasa and Malindi.
Flight tracking data shows the aircraft operating under the call sign FLOKI100 rather than the standard presidential designation Kenya 001, suggesting it has not yet resumed official duties carrying President William Ruto.
Harambee One was first delivered in 1995, making it more than 30 years old, well beyond the typical operational lifespan for its type.
The aircraft's age has created real headaches for the Kenya Air Force over the years, particularly as spare parts have grown increasingly scarce following the closure of the original Fokker manufacturer in the 1990s.
During the year Harambee One was away, Ruto relied on privately chartered aircraft for his international travel.
Fokker Services acknowledged the Kenya Air Force's efforts in keeping the plane airworthy across three decades of service.
While the upgrades have given the aircraft a fresh lease of life, long-term questions about its sustainability remain unanswered.
The government has not announced any plans to procure a replacement, and aviation experts note that a plane of this vintage will eventually need to be retired permanently.
