- Josh’s parents said they fully support his decision to race in honour of his brother, whose memory will remain close throughout the competition
British professional cyclist Josh Tarling will take to the start line of the Vuelta a España this Saturday, August 22, just eight days after losing his younger brother Finlay in a devastating on-course crash.
Finlay, 19, was killed during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal last Friday.
What happened to Josh Tarling's brother?
Rather than step away from the sport, Josh chose to honour his brother the only way he knows how: by racing.
Their parents, Dawn and Michael, confirmed the decision in a deeply personal Instagram message.
"On Saturday, Joshua will be riding the Vuelta," they wrote.
"He has chosen to do so in honour of his brother Fin, with the full support of his family, surrounded by a team who have been incredibly supportive."
The couple spoke warmly of the bond the brothers shared.
"I could not have wished for two boys who were closer… Joshua has been the most loving and supportive big brother to Fin. Finlay was so incredibly proud of his big brother… So it is right that Josh honours that love and pride by doing what Fin always loved watching him do."
He was competing for the NSN Development Team on the 166.8 km route from Melgaço to Fafe when a vehicle entered the closed race route and struck him.
His death sent shockwaves through the global cycling community.
The Cyclistes Professionnels Associés, which represents professional riders, described the news of Finlay's passing as leaving them "speechless and filled with anger."
Portuguese President António José Seguro also paid tribute, saying the tragedy had plunged both the peloton and the host nation into mourning.
The 2025 Vuelta a España gets underway in Monaco on Saturday before concluding in Granada on 13 September.
For Josh Tarling, every kilometre of the race will carry a meaning far beyond competition.
