Nairobi - A new Swiss Poll survey has positioned Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the frontrunner in the opposition presidential race, with data pointing to a generational divide that could shape Kenya's political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The poll, conducted between July 25 and August 6, 2026, surveyed 4,037 respondents using stratified random sampling across two data-collection methods: Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI).
The sample was split 51.6% female and 48.4% male, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4% at a 95% confidence level. Findings were released on Thursday, August 20.
Kalonzo leads, but opposition unity remains key
Among the opposition figures tested, Kalonzo recorded 22% national support, ahead of former ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna at 13%, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i at 11%, and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua at 6%.
The data becomes sharper when filtered to respondents who identified as anti-Ruto voters. Within that group, 41% preferred Kalonzo as the opposition flagbearer, compared to 26% for Sifuna, suggesting that he commands the deepest loyalty among voters actively seeking an alternative to President William Ruto.
When coalition configurations were tested, a three-way ticket bringing together Kalonzo, Sifuna, and Matiang'i attracted 44% support, the highest figure recorded among all opposition combinations tested in the survey.
Gen Z vote emerges as a defining variable
Despite Kalonzo's numerical advantage, the poll highlights a generational dynamic that no opposition candidate can afford to overlook. Some 58% of Sifuna's supporters fall within the 18 to 35 age bracket, making him the candidate with the strongest foothold among younger voters.
That demographic profile gives Sifuna a strategic value beyond his overall national polling figure. While Kalonzo brings established opposition support and cross-regional credibility, Sifuna represents the youth mobilisation capacity that proved consequential during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
The survey findings also identify distinct strengths for the other contenders. Matiang'i's background in Cabinet is framed as an executive experience asset, while Gachagua's position is described as offering potential leverage in the political realignment under way in the Mount Kenya region.
Taken together, the poll suggests that no single opposition figure currently holds enough support to mount a credible standalone presidential challenge.
The path to competitiveness, according to the data, runs through coalition-building that blends Kalonzo's national opposition base, Sifuna's youth appeal, and the regional considerations attached to both Matiang'i and Gachagua.
