We're ready to rise": Patrick Vieira takes the reins as Senegal's new head coach
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Patrick Vieira, born in Dakar, has been appointed as Senegal's new head coach following Pape Thiaw's dismissal
- Thiaw was sacked after Senegal surrendered a 2–0 lead to lose 3–2 to Belgium in the 2026 World Cup round of 32
- Vieira brings coaching experience from five clubs across England, France and Italy to his first international role
Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal captain and 1998 FIFA World Cup winner with France, has been named Senegal's new head coach, the country's football federation confirmed.
Vieira, 50, takes charge of the Lions of Teranga as a replacement for Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed following a turbulent end to his tenure that culminated in an early exit at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Notably, Vieira was born in Dakar, giving his appointment a personal connection to the country he will now represent as a manager.
Why Pape Thiaw was dismissed
Thiaw was handed the permanent role in December 2024 after spending years as assistant to Aliou Cissé.
His spell in charge quickly descended into controversy when, during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, he ordered his players off the pitch to protest a penalty decision.
The Confederation of African Football responded by stripping Senegal of the title and handing Thiaw a five-match touchline ban.
His World Cup campaign proved equally damaging. Senegal opened with a 5–0 victory over Iraq but then lost 2–3 to Norway and 1–3 to France in the group stage before reaching the round of 32.
There, they squandered a 2–0 advantage against Belgium, ultimately losing 3–2 after extra time. Thiaw was dismissed shortly afterwards.
Vieira's path to Senegal role
Vieira brings a varied club management career to his first international assignment. He began in senior management at New York City FC before moving to OGC Nice in France, then Crystal Palace in the Premier League, where he earned the Manager of the Month award in 2022.
He subsequently returned to France with Strasbourg before taking charge of Genoa in Italy.
His playing career gave him exposure to the highest levels of European football. As one of France's most recognisable midfielders, he was central to the squad that lifted the World Cup on home soil in 1998.
He later captained Arsenal, cementing his standing as one of the Premier League's defining figures of his era.
Senegal's squad contains several established players based at European clubs, and Vieira will be expected to rebuild confidence and restore stability after the disorder that defined Thiaw's final months in the dugout.
