'Wait a minute!' Moi University friends' 10-year recreation photo sparks global gender transition rumors

Over the weekend, Kenyan spoken-word artist and activist Willie Oeba posted two photos celebrating a decade-long friendship: one taken in 2016 and a recreated version taken at his friend Joseph Muia's wedding in August 2026.
He captioned it simply: "My G had his wedding today so we recreated this photo."
Quickly, the post spiraled into a trending global topic as eagle-eyed users began analyzing the group dynamic, with many unable to reconcile the new juxtaposition, which appeared starkingly different from the original pic.
In the original 2016 throwback picture, the group clearly features four men and one woman (positioned on the bottom left).
However, in the 2026 wedding recreation, the setup displays three men and two women - with a bride appearing on the far left and the woman from the original photo joining on the far right.
The sudden math - and gender - discrepancy immediately sent X (formerly Twitter) into a meltdown.
Commenters flocked to the post, frantically swiping back and forth between the two images trying to spot who swapped places - or whether one of the original squad members underwent a gender transition over the ten-year span.
"I've been staring at this for five minutes straight trying to map out who became who," wrote one user in a comment echoing thousands of others. Another joked, "The amount of back and forth I just did..."
Keeping the comments short and straight to the point, X users reshared the tweet tens of thousands of times, seeing it quickly rack up a staggering 6.6 million views and 33,000 'LIKES' in less than 48 hours.
Many users floated theories about transition journeys and identity shifts with others demanding an explanation into the extra lady and a proper breakdown of who, exactly, was who in the new photo.
"Wait a minute! So did your G marry his old G? Who is now a woman? Make it make sense!" someone else wrote.
However, others were quick to pick up that this was merely a classic photo-recreation mix-up where partners or new friends joined the frame, or individuals swapped standing positions entirely.
As the controversy raged on, global gossip platforms and websites, including WorldStar HipHop, which boasts over 43 million Instagram followers, and mainly posts about American culture and Hip Hop stars also jumped into the fray , adding fuel to the raging furnace.
The first photo, taken in 2016, features Moi University campus buddies Willie Oeba, Ferdinand Muganda, Beatrice Ambasa, Joseph Muia and Chochi (who's the one conspicuously missing in the new, 2026 photo).
In his place, Chochi was replaced by Gertrude Mulinge, Muia's now-wife, and the bride of the day in the fresh photo.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Joseph Muia, the bridegroom featured in the photo, also himself a reporter at Royal Media Services, expressed his shock at the comments, stating that while he was excited at the response at first, he would be later stumped to learn that people assumed his wife (Gertrude in the new picture) had transitioned from a man (Chochi in the old picture).
"I was already receiving calls and messages from family members and friends asking about the photo. I was at first excited and surprised then of course I got concerned when I saw some of the absurd comments before it hit me that the photo had been misinterpreted and that's why it had gone viral" he said, before clarifying that he was neither gay nor had he married a transgender woman.
On her part, Gertrude Mulinge, Muia's bride and the subject of the confusion said: " A day after the photo was posted, I realised my chats were blowing up on WhatsApp, people sending me screenshots and comments. I was taken aback by people thinking that I had transformed into a lady. I don't get the nexus between that guy's image and myself... "
She added: "From my perspective, I thought it was kind of automatic that Chochi was not in the photo and I had replaced him, but I don't think the public took it that way... That was quite an interesting turn..."
Citizen Digital's Joseph Muia married his longtime sweetheart Gertrude Mulinge at a colorful ceremony at the Tropical Gardens, Ruiru, Saturday, flanked by family, friends and colleagues from Royal Media Services' digital department.
