Gov't Unveils 4,566-Unit Affordable Housing Project in Shauri Moyo [Photos]

The government has unveiled the Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi, a major development expected to provide thousands of housing units alongside social and commercial amenities.

In a statement on Monday, August 24, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the project is being developed alongside Shauri Moyo A and will deliver 4,566 mixed-use housing units.

"Developed concurrently with Shauri Moyo A, the Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project will deliver 4,566 mixed-use housing units, supported by a kindergarten, clubhouse, shopping mall, hospital and swimming pool," the statement read.

Omollo said the project forms part of the government’s broader programme aimed at upgrading informal settlements and creating better-planned communities with improved living conditions.

"The development is part of the Government's wider Slum Upgrading Programme, which seeks to progressively eradicate informal settlements in Nairobi and replace them with safe, dignified and well-planned urban communities," the statement added.

Omollo also highlighted the project’s contribution to employment, saying construction activities are creating opportunities for workers and businesses across different sectors of the construction value chain.

"The project is generating thousands of employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers, including engineers, technicians, artisans, contractors, suppliers, transport operators and young people across the construction value chain," the statement concluded.

This comes days after Omollo announced that the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) is nearing completion.

In an update on Friday, August 21, he said final interior works and external finishes at the complex are progressing steadily.

"Under the supervision of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Engineers, the BICC is nearing completion, with tiling, glazing and roofing progressing alongside final interior works, external finishes and access roads," he said.

Omollo noted that once completed, BICC will attract business tourism and Kenya's rich cultural and wildlife heritage into one destination.

He also said the complex will position Nairobi as a competitive global commercial capital and strengthen Kenya’s appeal as a destination for business tourism.

"Such infrastructure is critical to reimagining Nairobi as a competitive global commercial capital, rather than merely a regional transit point," he added.

BICC, which covers more than 323,500 square meters, will feature an 11,000-delegate convention arena with 35 meeting rooms, a 5,000-seat main auditorium and a 3,500-seat secondary hall.

The facility will also have a Presidential Pavilion for up to 30 Heads of State and a 3,000-capacity banquet hall.

Omollo mentioned that future phases of the development will introduce luxury hotels, a shopping mall, food court, recreational facilities, a heliport and extensive parking.
