Beatrice Njoki Mitaru, the specially elected Member of the County Assembly of Kirinyaga representing persons with disabilities, died in the early hours of Monday, August 24, 2026.
She was pronounced dead at 3am at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri, where she had been undergoing treatment.

Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru confirmed the news, describing Mitaru as a dedicated public servant who championed inclusion and the rights of persons with disabilities throughout her tenure.
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Beatrice Njoki Mitaru. Kirinyaga will miss her commitment, warmth, and spirit of service," Waiguru wrote, extending her condolences to Mitaru's son, family, friends, and colleagues.

Mitaru was first nominated to the County Assembly following the 2017 General Election under the Jubilee Party, serving through the Second County Assembly from 2017 to 2022.
She was subsequently re-nominated under the UDA Party after the 2022 General Election, continuing her work in the Third County Assembly.
During her time in the assembly, she held the position of vice-chairperson on the Departmental Committee on Finance and Economic Planning.
She also served on the Business Committee, Women Caucus, and committees covering Gender and Youth, Environment, and Agriculture.
Beyond the county level, she served as leader and chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities Chapter within the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), a role that extended her advocacy nationally.
The county assembly of Kirinyaga's speaker issued an official notification on August 24, 2026, confirming the MCA's passing and acknowledging her contributions across multiple committees and legislative sessions.
Mitaru served the people of Kirinyaga for nearly a decade, making her one of the longest-serving specially elected MCAs in the county's history.
