Construction of classrooms at Kiuu River Primary begins
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
Construction of additional classrooms at Kiuu River Primary School in Kiambu County has commenced, as the third term commences next Monday, August 24, 2026.
Kiambu Town Member of Parliament (MP), Machua Waithaka, who is spearheading the project, noted that the new block under construction will host six classrooms.
“The project is aimed at easing congestion and providing our learners with a more conducive environment for learning. We remain committed to investing in education infrastructure and ensuring that our children have the facilities they deserve,” the legislator added.
The project is part of ongoing efforts by the legislator to expand education infrastructure in response to the growing demand for classroom space in schools within Kiambu Town Constituency.
In the same breath, renovation of 18 classrooms at Kiambu Primary School is almost complete. In a status update early this week, Mr. Waithaka said the renovation is part of the final phase of the ongoing school improvement programme.
“The renovation includes replacing old roofs, windows, and doors; installing floor tiles; painting the classrooms; fitting brand-new blackboards; and undertaking other improvements,” he added.
The renovation, being implemented through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), follows the completion of 11 new classrooms at the school and includes a facelift of the existing infrastructure.
Kiambu Town NG-CDF Constituency Manager Aloysius Njoroge said the renovation was informed by the deteriorating condition of some of the classrooms, which had made learning difficult, particularly during the rainy season.
“There were potholes in the classrooms, and the roof leaked, forcing learners to crowd in one corner during rainy days, which was inconvenient for both teachers and learners. The rainwater would even destroy their books since most of them left them at school,” Njoroge explained.
He said the ongoing improvements would provide learners with a safer and more conducive environment while addressing some of the infrastructure challenges that had persisted at the institution.
Beyond the classrooms, the works include the construction of a perimeter wall along the playground and installation of modern gates at both the school’s main entrance and playground entrance to enhance security within the institution.
Njoroge further noted that the construction of the perimeter wall was a key component of the project, citing concerns over unrestricted access to the school compound by outsiders.
“We had instances where outsiders could access the school compound, with some engaging in drug-related activities around the premises. The perimeter wall will therefore help secure the school environment and protect learners from exposure to such activities,” he said.
The simultaneous projects underscore the constituency’s continued focus on addressing both classroom shortages and deteriorating infrastructure in public learning institutions.
