Portuguese midfielder Quévin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing on the pitch during a friendly fixture between Real Sport Clube and Estrela da Amadora on Saturday, August 22.
West Bromwich Albion, where Castro began his professional career, confirmed his passing, describing it as untimely and extending their condolences to his family and loved ones.
The Championship club announced it would honour him during their upcoming fixture against Burnley, with players wearing black armbands and a round of applause planned for the 25th minute of the match.
Castro joined West Brom as a teenager in 2021, eventually breaking into the senior squad.
He made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal before earning his league debut in February 2022. During his time at The Hawthorns, he had loan spells at Burton Albion, Notts County, and Gateshead before permanently leaving the club in 2023.
After departing West Brom, Castro represented a succession of English clubs, among them York City, King's Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City, and Eastbourne. He subsequently returned to Portugal, where he continued playing until his sudden death.
Real Sport Clube, the club Castro was representing at the time of his collapse, paid tribute to the midfielder.
"We extend our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, team-mates, and staff," the club said in a statement.
Estrela da Amadora, the opposing side in the friendly, also expressed its grief, saying it was deeply saddened by Castro's passing and extending thoughts to all those close to him.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the football community, particularly among those who had known him during his years playing in England.
