Motorists stuck in Thika Road traffic hours after morning snarl-up
Motorists are still experiencing heavy traffic on Thika Road hours after a morning snarl-up affected movement along the busy highway.
The congestion was reported as motorists continued travelling towards Thika, with one road user describing the situation as strange.
“Traffic as you get into Thika at this hour – strange,” an X user said on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The traffic was earlier reported along the stretch from Weteithie to Delmonte, with motorists facing delays on the road. The affected section is on the Thika Superhighway, which connects motorists travelling between Nairobi, Juja, Thika and other parts of central Kenya.
Another X user said the delays had affected the journey from Juja towards Delmonte while travelling out of Nairobi. The motorist said the traffic had remained heavy despite attempts to use alternative routes.
“The stretch from Juja to Delmonte along Thika road (heading out of Nairobi) has been absolute chaos today. Even with panya routes, still wasted 1 hour to get to site. What was going on? We lose so much to these occasions. Traffic police were not even on the scene!” the X user said.
“Thika road to Kenol imeshikana mamaee. Mt. Kenya yote ilikuwa holiday Nairobi,” another user wrote.
Traffic remains heavy hours later
The continued traffic came after a truck broke down just past the Bluepost area earlier in the day. The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LODDCA) issued a traffic alert on Saturday, August 22, 2026, warning motorists about the heavy congestion.
“Massive traffic has been reported between Weteithie and Delmonte, with minimal movement. The congestion is reportedly caused by a truck that has broken down just past Bluepost,” LODDCA said.
The breakdown affected the movement of vehicles along the busy corridor, with long queues reported on the highway. Private vehicles, matatus and commercial trucks were among those affected by the traffic as motorists tried to move along the route.
The latest reports show that traffic remained an issue hours after the initial disruption was reported. Motorists approaching Thika continued to experience delays, with the congestion affecting movement along the highway.
The affected stretch carries heavy traffic throughout the day, with motorists from Juja, Ruiru and Thika using the road to access Nairobi. Weteithie is located along the Thika Superhighway between Juja and Thika, while Bluepost is a well-known landmark near Thika town.
The continued delays have left motorists spending more time on the road as they try to reach their destinations.
