A Catholic priest attached to the Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Karen, Nairobi, has been found dead inside his room at the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary in an apparent self-harm.
Father Alex Kalemba Motahingwa, aged 71, was discovered on Wednesday after he did not appear for the morning meal alongside his fellow priests, triggering a search of the seminary premises.
He was found lifeless inside room number 30 at the facility, with a nylon rope around his neck.
How the Discovery Was Made
Father Kalemba had conducted Mass at both the Apostles of Jesus Major Seminary and the Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as recently as Tuesday.
When he did not show up the following morning, concerned colleagues went looking for him and found him hanging inside his quarters.
Police who responded to the scene confirmed that the priest was already dead upon their arrival.
Investigators recovered what appeared to be a handwritten note left by Father Kalemba, containing the contacts of individuals he wished to be notified following his death. His passport was also found at the scene.

Father Kalemba, a Rwandese national, had been serving at the Karen-based institutions at the time of his death.
His body was subsequently transferred to Montezuma Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination to establish the official cause of death.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have opened an inquiry and are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.
