Mandy Patinkin's exit from Criminal Minds was one of television's most shocking departures. The award-winning actor, born Mandel Bruce Patinkin, played FBI profiler Jason Gideon from the show's 2005 premiere before walking off the set without warning after season two. The real reason why Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds was not simply "creative differences," as first reported — it came down to the show's graphic violence, which he later said was "destructive" to his mental health.

Who is Mandy Patinkin's Criminal Minds character?

FBI Special Agent Jason Gideon originally led the series as Mandy Patinkin's Criminal Minds character until he was written out of the show shortly after season 2. Gideon was the original profiler and senior agent in the Behavioral Analysis Unit's team as Supervisory Special Agent — a position later held by his friend David Rossi.

How was Gideon written out of the show?

The many disturbing cases in Criminal Minds eventually took a toll on Gideon. In the episode "No Way Out, Part II: The Evilution of Frank," from season 2, Sarah Jacobs — a friend of Gideon — is murdered by serial killer Frank Breitkopf. This leaves Gideon traumatised, and his guilt, combined with the toll other cases were taking on him, was enough for him to leave the BAU.

Gideon was last seen at the end of season 3, episode 2, titled "In Name and Blood." The episode featured a race against time to rescue Dr Spencer Reid from a ruthless serial killer. Gideon blamed himself for Reid's trauma, considering himself a father figure. He was also under emotional duress over agents killed in a bombing under his command. In the end, Gideon wrote a heartbreaking letter to Reid explaining his resignation from the BAU.

Does Gideon come back to Criminal Minds?

Jason Gideon was written out in season 3, with his fate finally revealed in season 10. The decision was made to go back to the late 1970s in Gideon's early days in the BAU. For these flashback scenes, Ben Savage took on the role of a young Gideon. Based on the original series, Gideon will not be properly back — the character was found killed in season 10.

Why did Mandy Patinkin leave Criminal Minds?

At first, the reason Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds was attributed to the catch-all Hollywood reason: "creative differences." While this is not exactly inaccurate, it perhaps downplays the severity of those disagreements.

By the time the truth emerged, it was common knowledge that Patinkin had gone "AWOL" after season 2 of Criminal Minds — without providing any notice to the show's producers or cast, he simply disappeared. An executive producer at the time described him as "the father who goes out for a carton of milk and then just never comes home."

The real reason: the show's violent content

Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds due to his aversion to the show's "disturbing content," which took a toll on his mental health.

In a 2012 interview with New York Magazine, Patinkin spoke candidly about his regret:

"The biggest public mistake I ever made was that I chose to do Criminal Minds in the first place. I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality. After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again." — Mandy Patinkin, New York Magazine

Just one year after that scathing assessment, an introspective Patinkin took a very different tone. "I behaved abominably," the actor admitted.

A pattern of early departures

Prior to playing Saul Berenson on Homeland, Patinkin had left several major series. "If he had a long-term contract, he would get antsy and bail," Showtime's Gary Levine told The Hollywood Reporter.

Both before and after playing Gideon, Patinkin played characters closely involved with tragic deaths. Right before the series, he played Rube on Dead Like Me, a show about grim reapers who had to collect the souls of people violently killed.

In the New York Magazine profile, he mentioned that although the show was "destructive to my soul and my personality," he also assumed he would never "get to work in television again" shortly after leaving it.

Who replaced Gideon in Criminal Minds?

After Gideon's abrupt departure from the BAU, Joe Mantegna replaced him as Special Agent David Rossi. Mantegna's character made a voluntary return from retirement to the BAU shortly after Patinkin left the franchise.

Why did Mandy Patinkin leave Homeland?

Patinkin did not leave Homeland — he stayed for its entire run. Though Mandy Patinkin looked right for the role of Saul Berenson on Homeland, Showtime had initial hesitations about the casting. Patinkin himself told The Hollywood Reporter: "I thought they were all crazy to hire me, given my track record. I never thought I'd work in television again after [Criminal Minds]." So he and Homeland agreed to keep the terms of the contract short.

In Patinkin's view, Criminal Minds glorified violence and depravity, whereas Homeland provided an important critique. "A show like Homeland is the antidote," he said. "It asks why there's a need for violence in the first place."

Patinkin played a counterterrorism operative named Saul Berenson starting in 2011, and was nominated for multiple awards as a result of his performance. The series eventually concluded in 2020.

What is Mandy Patinkin doing now?

Brilliant Minds marked the first network TV show Patinkin joined for a multi-episode arc since his time on CBS's Criminal Minds. He plays an esteemed family doctor who joins the staff of Bronx General Hospital and brings his own "unconventional methods to the workplace," fostering a mentor-like relationship with the lead character, Dr Wolf.

Brilliant Minds returned to NBC in the 2025 TV schedule, with Patinkin's character's story continuing into season 2.

Beyond television, Patinkin remains active in concert touring and is a vocal supporter of Doctors Without Borders and several other humanitarian causes.

Latest news

Season 2 of Brilliant Minds raised major questions around Dr Noah Wolf, played by Patinkin. Much of the season 1 storyline involved the lead character believing his father had died, only to learn Noah had been alive — and that his mother had known. Season 1 ended with Noah telling his son he was sick with "something strange" beyond the bipolar disorder he was already managing.

Showrunner Michael Grassi confirmed that "the story of Noah really does continue throughout the season. Whether or not we will see him again is a looping question mark, to be determined. But we love Mandy."
