“Since 2023”: Malindi mum searches for UoN son who vanished days to graduation
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- A Malindi woman has spent three years searching for her son, Maina Frank, who disappeared in Nairobi in August 2023
- Frank, 26, was a University of Nairobi mechanical engineering student who was days away from graduating when he went missing
- The family filed a missing persons report at Nairobi Central Police Station and has since searched radio stations and shared posters online
A Malindi mother is desperately appealing to Kenyans to help her find her son, Maina Frank, who vanished from Nairobi in August 2023 and has not been heard from since.
Frank was 26 years old at the time of his disappearance and was in his final year of a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi.
What makes his absence all the more painful for his family is that he disappeared just days before he was due to graduate.
"I reside in Malindi. Frank vanished exactly 3 years ago on August 7, 2023, days before graduation. Any leads will help bring him home," his mother said.
How Frank Maina went missing
According to a close friend, Frank left his aunt's home in Nairobi carrying a small bag, saying he needed to head to school to resolve some academic matters. He never came back.
When his aunt later visited the university to inquire about him, she was told that an exam-related issue he had faced had since been resolved by a committee, which had approved his graduation.
The family believes he may not have known this when he left. His mother travelled from Malindi to Nairobi to begin the search herself.
A missing persons report was filed at Nairobi Central Police Station, and the family also reached out to radio stations and circulated posters across social media platforms. His friends have actively joined the search effort.
The last known sighting came in November 2023, when a family friend reportedly ran into Frank in Nairobi's central business district. Since that encounter, no one has been able to confirm his whereabouts.
Frank's mother says she holds no ill will towards her son and wants him to know that whatever he may be going through, there is a way forward.
"We have been searching for him in vain. But then if you happen to know of his whereabouts, please just let me know. He made a mistake, and that's not the end of life," she said.
Anyone with information about Main Frank's whereabouts is urged to reach out to his family.
