Ndindi Nyoro's Defiance: Former Ruto Ally Vows to Lead United Opposition Charge for 2027
Kiharu MP positions himself at the forefront of the 'Wantam' movement, calling for a unified front against President William Ruto.
Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has dramatically escalated his opposition to President William Ruto, boldly positioning himself as a central figure in the burgeoning campaign to dislodge the Head of State from power in 2027. In his first significant political address since aligning with the Peoples' Party of Kenya (PPK), Mr. Nyoro unequivocally labeled President Ruto as 'Kenya's number one enemy' and committed to traversing the nation to forge a formidable, unified opposition capable of securing victory. This move signifies a major realignment in Kenya's political landscape, especially within the influential Mt Kenya region, as the next general election approaches.
Mr. Nyoro's declaration places him squarely within the burgeoning 'Wantam' movement, advocating for a consolidated front against the incumbent. His shift is particularly noteworthy given his past as one of President Ruto's most influential allies in the Mt Kenya region, where he played a crucial role in establishing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) network ahead of the 2022 general election. He also previously held the powerful position of chairman of the Parliamentary Budget Committee, underscoring his political acumen and organizational capacity. Now, he vows to deploy the very same grassroots networks and political machinery he once utilized for Dr. Ruto, against him.
The Kiharu legislator stated that his decision followed a year of 'soul-searching,' during which he concluded that President Ruto had deviated from the core objectives of the Kenya Kwanza administration. He accused the President of turning against key leaders who facilitated his ascent to power, citing the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other political allies as clear evidence of the administration's changed direction. Mr. Nyoro is now on a mission to bring together a diverse array of opposition figures, including Mr. Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Attorney-General Justin Muturi, former Justice Minister Martha Karua, and former Defence Minister Eugene Wamalwa, emphasizing the critical need to avoid the divisions that have historically benefited incumbent governments.
Underscoring his commitment, Mr. Nyoro issued a direct challenge to the President: “President Ruto, let me tell you that the way we criss-crossed the country campaigning for you and made the wheelbarrow party (UDA) popular, we will do the same and ensure that we paint another layer of colour on yellow. You will know the stuff we are made of.” He stressed that the opposition must not repeat past mistakes of disunity, asserting that if he were to be the opposition flag bearer, he would send Ruto home, and equally, he would lend his full support to any other agreed-upon opposition leader. His immediate task, he added, is to ensure a unified candidate, along with a running mate, is agreed upon by next year, aiming for a decisive first-round victory without taking any chances.
However, Mr. Nyoro's new political vehicle has not been without skepticism from within the opposition ranks. Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, both allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, recently voiced concerns that Mr. Nyoro's new party could inadvertently fragment the anti-Ruto vote in Mt Kenya, potentially serving the President’s interests. Mr. Nyoro vehemently rejected these suggestions, affirming that PPK would not become a platform for internal attacks or undermining fellow opposition leaders. He declared, “For those who are used to hurling insults at Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders, I will take you head-on. I will not collide with anyone in the opposition or Wantam movement,” further warning against any politician attempting to use PPK to attack opposition figures.
Mr. Nyoro’s assertive entry into the opposition leadership adds a potent new voice to the intensifying political contest within the Mt Kenya region, a critical battleground for national elections in Kenya. His move signals a significant shift in the region's political dynamics, moving the focus from whether the region will support Dr. Ruto to who will ultimately inherit its formidable political influence and voter base in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
