Several people are feared dead following a crash involving an 18-seater PSV matatu and a black saloon car along the road between Quiver Mombasa Road and Katani late Thursday night, August 20.
Both vehicles were left extensively damaged after the collision, coming to rest in a roadside ditch.
Preliminary reports suggested the two vehicles struck each other head-on, though investigators had not formally confirmed the circumstances of the crash at the time of publication.
Low-quality videos from the scene showed what are believed to be victims scattered across.
Extent of the Damage
The matatu bore particularly severe structural damage. Its front section was heavily wrecked, with the windscreen and driver's cabin bearing the brunt of the impact. The rear and driver's side of the vehicle also appeared to have caved in. The saloon car was found nose-down in the ditch, with its rear end suspended above the ground.
Early indications suggested the matatu was travelling in the direction of Nairobi while the saloon car was headed towards Katani when the two met on the road.
Rescue Efforts Under Way
Emergency response teams were deployed to the scene to assist those trapped in or around the wreckage. However, the precise number of fatalities and injuries remained unconfirmed, and it was unclear how many occupants had been pulled from the vehicles by the time this report was filed.
The number of passengers on board the matatu at the time of the crash was also not immediately established, nor had authorities confirmed what caused the collision.
