The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has named two civilian suspects and a serving police officer as key figures in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso, a researcher who was shot dead in Nairobi on July 29.

DCI director Mohamed Amin disclosed the findings at a press briefing held at the agency's Mazingira Complex headquarters on Kiambu Road Friday, August 7.

He said forensic analysis, detailed CCTV examination, and intelligence-led operations had produced a significant breakthrough in the case.

Suspects named in the investigation

Amin identified Daniel Mwangi Njoroge as a central organiser of the operation, establishing that he was behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser Prado, registration number KDH 600A.

"After a rigorous forensic analysis, detailed CCTV examination, and intelligence-led operations, our investigators were led to two key suspects: Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia," he said.

According to the DCI, that vehicle was used to block the Uber cab in which Dr Mutiso was travelling shortly before she was fatally shot. The second civilian suspect named was Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia.

The DCI further revealed that the investigation had led detectives to officers within the Kenya Police Service.

Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, who served as the officer in charge of Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, was identified as the intermediary between the financiers behind the plot and the team that carried out the attack.

Amin said Sang was also the source of the murder weapon. The inspector is currently at large.

How Dr Mutiso was killed

Mutiso, a director at the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health, was ambushed at approximately 9:00 AM at the intersection of Mbagathi Link Road and Mauenzi Road in Nairobi County while travelling in a hired cab.

Witnesses described a carefully coordinated attack. An SUV was already positioned at the junction when the taxi arrived, and a motorcycle carrying three individuals passed both vehicles before gunfire erupted.

Mutiso was shot twice in the head at close range. The attackers fled on the motorcycle as the SUV departed simultaneously.

Her driver rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. DCI detectives subsequently impounded the taxi and retrieved two spent bullet casings from inside the vehicle.

Investigators had been reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas, examining the mobile phones of both the victim and her driver, and questioning her husband.

Detectives also established that Mutiso had previously filed a report at Kilimani Police Station regarding threats to her life, and were working to determine whether those earlier reports were connected to her killing.
