Kenyans should prepare for mixed weather conditions across the country from August 16, 2026, to August 20, 2026, according to the latest five-day outlook from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The report, issued on August 14, 2026, states that “rainfall is expected in few counties,” meaning wet weather will affect fewer than 33 per cent of those areas.

Chilly mornings for central and highlands

People in Nairobi, the Central Highlands, and parts of the Rift Valley will need to keep warm as cold mornings continue.

The forecast states that “Intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nakuru and Kajiado counties.”

These overcast spells will essentially be weather that “starts and stops, comes and goes” across the five days.

Nairobi and Machakos will see nighttime temperatures drop to a cold 9°C, with daytime highs in the capital reaching between 24°C and 27°C.

Nyandarua will experience even colder conditions, with minimum temperatures dipping to 8°C on August 17, 2026 and August 19, 2026, alongside afternoon light showers.

Hot northern days and afternoon showers in Western

In contrast, northern counties will experience high heat throughout the week. Temperatures in Mandera and Turkana will hit maximums of 37°C. Garissa and Wajir will reach up to 35°C, though both counties may get light morning rains on August 17, 2026.

Along the coastal strip, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu can look forward to sunny intervals mixed with light showers.

The weather body describes these light showers as “Gentle rain, drizzle” measuring under 5 mm. Taita Taveta will remain mostly sunny during the day, with maximum temperatures touching 32°C.

Western regions, the Lake Victoria basin, and parts of the South Rift will have sunny mornings followed by scattered afternoon showers. Kakamega and Vihiga will get light afternoon showers daily from August 16, 2026 to August 20, 2026, while Nakuru will see moderate showers on August 17, 2026.

The forecast adds that “County-specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorological Services” for those seeking localised updates.
