End of an era: Questions as Lenana School chief principal takes early retirement
This story has significance for readers across Kenya and beyond.
- Lenana School Chief Principal William Kiplagat Kemei opted for early retirement with effect from August 1, 2026
- The Parents Association Chairman announced the transition on August 12 in a letter addressed to parents and guardians
- A new chief principal, Mr Koech, has taken up the role as the school awaits further communication on the transition
Lenana School Chief Principal William Kiplagat Kemei has left his post following an early retirement, with his departure coming weeks after the Nairobi national school experienced a period of unrest that led to its temporary closure.
The Parents Association Chairman, Jonah Marahpash, broke the news to parents and guardians on August 12, 2026, through a formal written communication. According to the letter, Kemei's retirement took effect on August 1, 2026.
Transition at Lenana School
The letter from Marahpash gave no reason for Kemei's decision to leave before the end of his term, nor did it outline how long he had served as chief principal. What it did offer was a warm acknowledgement of his contribution to the school.
"On behalf of the Parents Association, parents and guardians, I extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kemei for his dedicated service and leadership at Lenana School," Marahpash wrote.
The same communication confirmed that Mr Koech had already assumed the role of chief principal and welcomed him to the position.
Marahpash indicated that further details regarding the leadership handover would be shared with the school community in due course.
Students return after closure
Kemei's exit follows a turbulent period for the school. Students had earlier been sent home after unrest disrupted normal activity on the school grounds.
They subsequently returned to class and completed the term before breaking for the school holidays.
The timing of the retirement, coming so closely after the disruption, has raised questions among parents and observers, though the Parents Association has not drawn any direct connection between the two events in its official communication.
Lenana School, located in Nairobi, is one of Kenya's most prominent national secondary schools, with a long history and a strong alumni network.
Leadership changes at the institution tend to attract considerable attention from parents, former students and education stakeholders across the country.
